There’s just too many positive things going on in Canadian Comedy this week to not at least give a quick run down. Here’s just a few highlights:
JUST FOR LAUGHS – HOMEGROWN COMPETITION – CANADA WINS! (Also Nigel Grinstead and Chris Robinson)
In what can only be described as a bold and impressive statement to the world of comedy, this year’s Homegrown Comic Competition at Just For Laughs was nothing short of electric. With many, including us here at TOOFAR.TV, considering this the strongest Homegrown line-up in recent memory, every single comic brought their A-Game, starting with Keith Pedro dropping perhaps the best competition Bullet Spot I’ve ever seen. For those unaware, drawing the bullet is every comic’s nightmare in a competition, but Pedro nearly took the prize with essentially a flawless set, his experience with Theater Stages showing. Up next was the impossible-not-to-love Nigel Grinstead, who turned his mic cord coming unplugged the second he grabbed it into a minute of comedy gold, seamlessly transitioning into the kind of killer set we’re all used to him having, showcasing the effortless comedic talent that has had comedy nerds buzzing since he first stepped on stage in Toronto. 21 year old Mayce Galoni was up 3rd, showing why a lot of comics use the Prodigy label when discussing this way-too-good-for-his-age bundle of talent. Strong sets kept rolling in from Sophie Buddle, Ryan Dillon, Jordan Chyzowski, Daniel Carin, Chantel Marostica, a dominant set from Mike Rita and another arguably flawless performance from eventual runner-up Chris Robinson. Rita and Robinson both showed incredible maturity in their use of the whole stage, with Rita prowling and crouching from end to end in a Jim Jefferies-esque fashion and Robinson’s casual act-out of lying in the grass with a puppy while trying to remain gangster leaving the crowd in stitches. I lost count of applause breaks as the show came to a close. Canadian Comedy icon Scott Thompson kept the crowd laughing throughout and collectively, while winners were named, I think everyone in attendance knows that the biggest winner was Canadian Comedy.

K. TREVOR WILSON REPRESENTS CANADA IN SEASON ONE OF “ROAST BATTLE” ON COMEDY CENTRAL
After a strong showing last year, K. Trevor Wilson came back to represent Canada in the first season of Comedy Central’s new one-on-one Roast show based on the cult hit live series started in L.A. that has been lighting up New York since partnering with Roastmaster Jeff Ross. Vowing to dispel the polite Canadian Stereotype, K. Trev blasted his way through the tournament, including a high-profile win over well-renowned Roast Killer Tony Hinchcliffe (Host of the Ron Jeremy Roast, and regular Comedy Central Roast Writer.) In a battle for the ages, K. Trev would be taken down by eventual champion Mike Lawrence, but not before following through on his promise… and hopefully opening the doors for more Canadians in subsequent seasons. Canadian Comedians would love to see resident Canadian Roast King Tyler Morrison in Season 2.
THE RUDE DUDE’S PODCAST
Speaking of Tyler Morrison, His RUDE DUDE’S PODCAST has had some incredible guests in recent weeks, including former Montreal Canadien’s First Rounder Terry Ryan, Comedian Rob Pue and the legendary Ed The Sock – Who divulged his plans to turn Canadian Comedy on its head with a brand new Digital Network… we can’t wait!
IAN ATLAS AND EMPIRE COMEDY LIVE’S “CANADA’S FINEST” SERIES CONTINUES WITH A MONSTER SHOW

Can’t go wrong with that line-up. All-in-all it’s pretty clear that Canadian Comedy has never been stronger. And that’s why we need to end this post off with the most important thing to happen in the country this past week or so. An impassioned plea from beloved and multi-talented Toronto sketch and stand-up darling Sandra Battaglini to Justin Trudeau… how about a little love for Canadian Comedians from Arts Funding and a little help getting across the border for our number one export!
