To the delight of Canadian Comedy Fans (and the dismay of Canadians who don't live in Montreal) The Legend, the Icon, Dave Chappelle will be performing a full slate of concert shows as part of this year's Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal from July 24th -28th. The shows sold out almost instantly, more were added this morning at 10am (July 18th) - and JFL insists, despite rampant skepticism, that they still have tickets left. They won't last long though... it's Dave Chappelle folks, and he doesn't do this as often as he used to. Which brings us to our desperate plea to all of you lucky enough to get tickets to see this master of his craft at work. On behalf of comedy fans the world over and for the sake of stand-up comedy in general... please, please RESIST THE URGE TO SCREAM 'I'M RICK JAMES BITCH' DURING THE SHOW!!!!!!!! In fact, don't say anything during the show. Sit in your seats. And then STFU and listen to his jokes! He's been trying to get back on stage for the past few years, but every time he does, self absorbed jackasses ruin it for everyone! So put your stupid phones away, stop recording the show, stop yelling things and just sit back and enjoy the show! And if someone does manage to get in the door who thinks they will 'help out' the performance by hollering 'WHHHHHAAAT?????!?? OKAYYYYYY!!!!' in the middle of his well thought out routine, please kindly do the world a favour and stuff gym socks in their mouth, strap ducktape over it and take them into the mens washroom where you can kindly explain that stand-up comedy is not a Metallica concert and it doesn't work when frat boy idiots keep screaming shit at the stage. Steve Martin had to stop performing stand-up comedy because the crowds got too huge and too unruly. Imagine that. One of the greatest performers of all-time, forced to retire because of audiences who can't just enjoy the show for an hour and not scream and shout at the stage. What a tragedy. And this run of shows could very well be the deciding factor for how the rest of the Chappelle Stand Up Legacy plays out. Because after JFL, Dave is slated to headline the Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Tour Presented by Funny Or Die - his first National Tour in nearly a decade. This can go one of two ways. Montreal can go great. The tour can go great. And we can all return to living in a world where Dave Chappelle is on a stage, telling jokes and working towards his next special. Or... a handful of nitwits can prove that we don't deserve nice things, and we continue living in a world with only 2 full length Chappelle specials on tape, from long ago. Forever. We can sit them next to Eddie Murphy's two specials and dream about what could have been. Louis CK is the reigning king of comedy, and he's joined at the top by an amazing host of all-time greats like Bill Burr and Doug Stanhope. But let's not forget the old king chose to walk away... and could return at any time. If his fans would just let him, and understand they're the reason he can't perform any more. Comedy requires attention and respect from the audience. Otherwise it doesn't work folks. And the two kings before Dave are still around too... with the master hinting over the past few years even he may return to the stage soon. Which brings us to our last pipe dream: Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock and Eddie Murphy on tour together. That's what's at stake here folks. Hosted by Keenan Ivory Wayans? Hey, it's an absolute best case scenario fantasy... but it is still a remote possibility. So please Montreal, control yourself... because Dave can't be Dave, when every time he steps on stage he sees a thousand iPhone screens and every set-up is over before it even begins thanks to yet another slack-jaw who thinks screaming out lines from a show we all saw 10 years ago is going to make for a night of great comedy. For anyone. The ball is in your court Montreal. Prove to Mr. Chappelle that we're ready for him to return. He's ready.
